The Reroute Train Visit form enables you to reroute a train visit that is already routed to another facility. You can reroute a train visit to an operational facility (inside the same complex as the departing facility complex) or a non-operational facility (inside a different complex).

Requirements, Behavior, and Constraints:

Too late to reroute Train Visit XX. Train Visit XY has already arrived at Facility XX.

Similarly, when you try to reroute a train visit that has the train visit phase Working or Completed, N4 also presents an error.

Further, N4 also raises an error if you attempt to reroute a train visit that has departed its facility, and has already arrived and departed the Next Facility,

Too late to reroute Train Visit XX. The Next Facility Visit has been Cancelled or already departed Facility XX.

For more information on train visit phases see visit phases (on page 1), to know about advancing the phase of a train visit see Advance Train Visit form (on page 1), and to know how to set the next facility see Edit Train Visit form (on page 1).

To reroute the selected train visit to a different facility:

  1. From the Next Facility lookup field, select the appropriate facility to which you want to reroute the train visit.

If you had already set the Next Facility value while creating the train visit using Add Train Visit form (on page 1), N4 displays that value by default.

In the Next Facility lookup field, N4 lists all the operational facilities in the same complex by default. If you set RLRAIL007 (RAIL_INCLUDE_NON_OP_FACILITIES) (on page 1) to True, N4 lists both the operational and non-operational facilities.

If you select the same value for the Facility and the Next Facility field for a train visit (which is not allowed), N4 displays the following error message:

"Values for "Facility" and "Next Facility" match. Please select different values for these fields."

  1. Click Save.

N4 creates the events UNIT_REROUTE, REROUTE_RV with appropriate notes, which can be viewed in the History, Events tab in the Units Inspector and the Train Inspector (on page 1) respectively.

To set the Next Facility for a train visit that is already Departed:

  1. In the Advance Train Visit form (on page 1), set the train visit to Complete.

  1. In the Edit Train Visit form (on page 1), set the Next Facility.

  2. In the Advance Train Visit form, set the train visit back to Departed.

Sample rerouting scenario

Consider a train visit TRN001 that departed from a facility A and was routed to facility B as train visit TRN002. Before the train has arrived at facility B, you decide to reroute it to facility C (either an operational or a non-operational facility).*

In order to reroute a train visit in facility A, there must be an inbound train visit with the same railroad and service as the departing train at the facility to which you are rerouting the train visit. If one doesn't exist you can create a new inbound train visit using the Add Train Visit form (on page 1) with the following criteria:

Otherwise, you can use an inbound train visit that is listed in the Next Facility Visit lookup field in the Advance Train Visit form. If you had created a new train visit based on the above said criteria, N4 displays that train in the Next Facility Visit lookup field. Now, you can select that train visit, enter the other relevant details in the Advance Train Visit form and save the details. Now, you can reroute the TRN001 to an operational or non-operational facility using the Reroute Train Visit form.

When you open N4 instances from the three facilities A, B, and C before and after train visit reroute, the applications display the statuses of the train visits, railcars, and onboard units as follows:

Before reroute:

Facility A:

The train TRN001 has departed facility A with the Next Facility as facility B and the phase of the train is Departed. The status of the railcars and the units at this facility are Inactive and Departed respectively. As a result N4 creates a history of event UNIT_OUT_RAIL.

Facility B:

In this facility, the train TRN002 is at the phase of Created. More specifically, N4 updates the phase as Inbound only if you advance the train visit. The status of the railcars and the units at this facility are Active and Inbound Active respectively.

After reroute:

Now, you reroute the train to another facility C instead of facility B by entering C as the Next Facility for the train visit.

Facility A:

N4 creates the following history events:

The outbound railcars are inactive and the units on board are departed.

Facility B:

N4 creates the following history event:

The expected train visit in facility B is not Canceled but updated with facility C as its Next Facility. The railcars are made inactive and the inbound units do not get listed because the train is rerouted to facility C.

Rerouting a train visit does not automatically change the phase of original inbound train visit.

Facility C:

N4 creates the following history events:

In this facility, N4 creates a history of event for the rerouted railcar visit and the containers.  The inbound railcars of the train are made active and the units are Active, T-state Inbound and V-State Active. The phase of the inbound train is Created.
